Welcome to Aladdin!

This is the famous story of Aladdin, a boy who falls in love with a princess, chronicling his trials and tribulations as he tries to win her hand in marriage. We whisk you away to an Arabian land, rather than the China of the Arabian Nights story, to tell the tale of a Aladdin and his quest to pursue true love, along with the villians who stand in his way and the genies who lend a helping hand.

Can Aladdin thwart the villains’ plans and win the heart of the princess? There’s only one way to find out!

What is it?

Aladdin is a two-act pantomime, with nine scenes.

The scope of the play is designed specifically with amateur groups in mind and has various features that AmDram groups will appreciate:

  • The cast consists of 11 main characters where the Monkey can be a puppet or a small actor in a suit.
  • Chorus members can be doubled up with a minimum of 6 needed
  • The split between male and female ranging from 9M/2F to 7F/4M.
  • The running time has been kept to a reasonable length because younger children won’t sit still for hours on end and won’t respond well to being kept up too late either. Running time is somewhere between 2 hours and 2 hours 15 minutes, including a 20 minute interval.
  • The script is story driven and goes back to the original Aladdin story (as told in the Arabian Nights) but set in an Arabian-like world and keeps the most important traditional elements. Oh yes we do!

What’s it all about?

Aladdin lives in Farawaybia with his mother, Fatima, who runs a small yarn shop. He has a pet monkey, called Asif, who he talks to but only he is able to hear Asif reply. Aladdin is also prone to flights of fancy, a dreamer.

The story gathers pace when an evil Magician appears. He is after a Magic Lamp that can be found in a cave which can only be opened by Aladdin. So the magician tricks his way into the family and takes Aladdin to the Cave of Wonders.

Inside the cave, Aladdin finally sees through his ruse and confronts the Magician. This leaves poor Aladdin with the lamp but trapped in the cave and the Magician walking away empty handed, thinking Aladdin dead. As luck would have it, Aladdin discovers that the lamp contains a Genie who can grant his every wish.

The kingdom of Farawaybia is ruled by a Sultan who has a beautiful daughter, a daughter that Aladdin falls deeply in love with. So with the Genie’s help he now magically becomes a prince to win the heart of the princess. This will be no easy feat and the Sultan’s Vizir has plans for his son to marry the princess.

When the Magician finds out that Aladdin is alive and that he has the lamp he vows to take it, joined by the Vizir, whose plans for his son’s marriage have been thwarted. Together they team up to take back all that they have lost from Aladdin.

Productions

Aladdin was first produced and performed by Pyrford Little Theatre on January 21st/22nd and 28th/29st 2011 at the Village Hall in Pyrford.

An enthusiastic and dedicated cast and crew worked for almost three months to prepare for the show. Many people put a lot of time and effort into the show and the writers/producers of the show would like to thank each and every one of them. Aladdin wouldn’t have been the same without you.
